Smart Beginnings Reading Hour

VOLUNTEER with Smart Beginnings’ Reading Hour program

Through your service, you will help change a child’s academic path by encouraging a love for reading and being a positive mentor.

Reading Hour is a program in which adult volunteers are paired, one-to-one, with children in local childcare centers. These volunteers read with the same child every week for thirty minutes to generate enthusiasm for books, and increase the child's potential for success in school and in life.

Before you commit to serving, please read and understand the following:

  • Reading Hour is a weekly commitment. A child will be depending on you to be there on the same day each week. This is important so that the child can grow and mature at a steady pace as well as develop a positive relationship with you as his or her reading buddy.
  • You must commit to read for at least the duration of a semester, but Smart Beginnings prefers that you read to the same child until the end of the academic year. Again, we want a consistent relationship between the child and his or her buddy.
  • It is important that you are fluent in English, however, if you speak another language, we can explore different opportunities for you.
  • Each volunteer will be trained by a center coordinator. The training will include important topics and must be completed before beginning Reading Hour.
  • In addition, each volunteer must complete a background check for his or her own safety and the safety of Smart Beginnings, Virginia Tech, the participating child care center, and child.

Reading Hour If you are interested in volunteering with us, please fill out the volunteer application (docx), (pdf), and return it. You will then be given information needed to complete the background check and matched with a participating center.
